The Woven Co is a small batch producer – what does that even mean?
Artisanal, that’s a word that gets thrown around a lot these days, and I think people have different opinions on what it means – but I think the general impression is that it is something that will cost more and be better than mass production. But why?
For me, it means creating products that focus on Quality, Ethics and Experience. It’s a decision to cut no corners and to produce with total attention to detail, driven by my heart, my beliefs and my passion.

My business model essentially makes me the opposite of large scale production; where the big operations enjoy cost efficiencies and seek out shortcuts for productivity. It’s reasonable some of those finer details are missed or traded out for the greater goal. There are often shareholders to account to, with a focus on driving down production costs, achieving sales and profit targets – ultimately to deliver return on investments. It’s a different mindset entirely.
Whereas I stand in my beliefs and fight for them, even when the going gets tough. I do not have shareholders to return profits to, and my scale of operations does not lend itself to many efficiencies along the way (although I hope in time to grow into a few!). I am considered in all of my decisions, big or small, from the unique colour choices for the wools right down to how I label the wool (by hand); I’m thinking about the quality, the ethics and the experience. It would be fair to say that I am stubborn in my beliefs, not willing to compromise and resistant to all the ‘well-meaning advice’ on production (like producing off-shore!) although the truth is that I am always open minded to anything that lines up with my core values. I do not presume to know everything, or have it all worked out, I just care, and I care a lot.
